4. LEARN
The Transition To Iwata
Iwata airbrushes have been the choice of airbrushes by many for quite some time. However, they have developed help spray gun that are catching the attention of many painter as well. Many painters, as myself, were sold on Sata for many years. In fact, I think that I started using Sata after the Binks #7. However, the last several years, I have transitioned to Iwata as my gun of choice. In fact, most students are preferring Iwata as well. If you are looking for a gun to buy, I definitely think you should consider Iwata. I believe that they out perform Sata and they are less expensive.
Gun Of Choice
So which gun do I recommend? I have an Extreme and a Supernova. Both guns spray extremely well. The 1.3 is designed for paint (base coat) and the 1.4 is designed for clear coat. However, I prefer the 1.3 for base coat and clear coat. If I were going to buy 1 gun, I would buy the Iwata Supernova with a 1.3. There is no once size fits all, as many painters prefer the 1.4 for clear coat. Below is a video review, which includes information about the Iwata Spray Guns.
So How Do I Adjust A Paint Gun?
This is a question often asked, but there is no absolute. I have some recommendations for you, but you will need to fine tune it to your unique spraying style. However, here is a video that will give you a few spray gun adjustment tips.

How Do I Clean and Maintain A Paint Gun?
This is one of the most important things you can do for your paint gun. It does not matter how good your gun is if it is not properly cleaned overtime. Even the best gun can spray like crap if you do not take care of it. In the video below, I am going to demonstrate how to clean a paint gun using only 2 oz of thinner.
Can I See The Gun In Action? – HOW TO SPRAY PAINT
Yes, we used a Iwata 1.3 to spray a tricoat paint job. We used the same gun for base coat, mid-coat(tricoat) and the clear coat. The gun performed and outstanding job. Watch the video to watch the complete process.
So where do I find a 1.3 Iwata Supernova Hybrid?
Below is the gun that I would recommend if I were to only purchase 1 gun for base coat and clear coat. This gun work extremely well and preferred my most of my students and myself. Click the photo to learn more about the Iwata spray gun.

WAIT! I AM JUST A DIY THAT DOES NOT WANT TO SPEND MUCH ON A SPRAY GUN….IS THERE ANYTHING CHEAPER….THAT WORK GOOD?
Yes, I did mention another paint gun that is less expensive in the review video. I recommend the Iwata Supernova Hybrid and have leaned more toward it since I made the review video. However, I totally understand you may not want to spend that kind of money on a hobby. If you are wanting to save money, but want the best purchase for the cost, than I would recommend the DeVilbiss FinishLine 3 HVLP spray gun as I mentioned in the video. This gun comes with a 1.3 tip, which will work for your base coats and clear coats, 1.5fluid tip and 1.8 tip for your heavier coatings such as primer surfacer. So this gun could be used for all purpose. Just be sure to clean it extremely good after each use. Watch the cleaning video to learn how to do this. We only use our DeVilbiss for primer surfacer, but it spray well. This would make a great second gun as a primer gun, or an all purpose gun. So I you are DIY not wanting to make a big investment or if you want a second gun for primer, this may be the better option for you.

So far I am happy with what I see however I would gladly watch the entire paint job at regular speed. This is so I can get a feel for speed and time and of course not get so dizzy watching the speeded up version. 🙂
So feel free to put an optional link or video of the regular speed paint job. But so far I am learning something each vid. Thanks
