Technical Education Budget Cuts
The past few years have been a challenge for technical education programs due to educational budget cuts, but more challenges are heading our way.
When money is tight, schools start looking at the programs that cost more to operate. It’s no secret that a technical program, such as collision repair is going to cost more to operate than an academic classroom, but cutting technical programs is a huge mistake. These are the programs that teach the skills to individuals that many small businesses depend on to be successful.
ABRN wrote an article that discusses something that we have been talking about at our college. That is the cut in Carl Perkins funding. This is funding that technical programs have relied on for training and equipment. Therefore, schools are going to have to look for new ways to fund their technical programs. It may result in passing more of the cost to the students or looking for private donations.
I don’t think anyone has the answers at this point, but we must be creative and start thinking for additional ways to assure the success of our programs.
To fight for the Carl Perkins act, please visit the ACTE website linked on the right side of this website. You can also read an article written by ABRN to learn more.

7 Steps To Perform Dent Repair Using A Stud Welder Gun
1. Remove coating (grinder or dual action sander) sanding takes longer, but it much safer with today’s thin metals.
2. Using stud welder gun weld several pins on the damaged area. (remember first in last out)
3. As you start pulling your indirect damage first, use a body hammer to tap down on the highs. (this also helps relax your metal)
4. Pull direct damage last.
5. Remove pins and grind any of the remaining stud welded to the panel. (do not over heat metal)
6. Grind or sand 4″ past damage area to provide a area to apply filler without overlapping paint with filler.
7. Blow repair area off with compressed area.
Now you are ready to apply your body filler, block, prime, block, and get ready for paint.

Collision Repair Program at Baker College in Flint Up To A Challenge
I came across this video of Baker College’s Collision Repair program getting ready to perform a restoration job. However, it was not the car that caught my attention, it’s the facility. Check out how clean and the amount of space they have. I certainly that this program would be a college for our NATEF (ASE) accredited program list, but unfortunately, after checking, I could not confirm that the program is accredited. I still thought this was worth posting, due to the facility. The space, cleanliness, and painted floor really make this shop look great.
Are you a collision repair instructor or student? If you are, let’s hear about it. Let us know if you have videos or photos of it. We can post them and show it off for you. If you’re a NATEF accredited school and you have a video, we can post it in NATEF Schools list.
