Collision Repair Industry News
It’s All About Lean
The auto collision repair industry has been focused on lean the past several years. It seems like every time I turn around I am reading about lean, cycle times, etc. From what I understand, shops must improve cycle times by working much smarter. Or perhaps the insurance industry is the butcher and the repair shops must work with what they are given by the insurance company. Well, for whatever reason, I believe that this should be a concern of every body shop that wants to continue to stay in business in the future. With that said, BASF has stepped up to the plate to offer a lean workshop in Salt Lake City, UT on November, 9-10. To learn more about this workshop visit ABRN.
Helping Support The Collision Repair Industry
I would like to thank companies and individuals for supporting the technicians of tomorrow. This allows colleges to a better job by giving them the things that they need to teach students about the collision repair industry. Let’s face it, collision repair is a very expensive program. Not only do we require more lab space than many programs, we also require expensive equipment, and body shop and paint materials. With budgets being cut over the past several years, I have heard of a number of collision repair programs close. Therefore, I would like to comment everyone that supports collision repair schools and colleges. For instance, I just read about State Farm donating $70,000 to I-CAR Education Foundation. Kudos to you State Farm! Read more about this at ABRN.
Did You Replace The Seat Belts
A blog was recently featured on Collision Hub about replacing seat belts. Inspecting and replacing seat belts is something that may be easily overlooked when repairing a vehicle; however, this can lead serious injury if the vehicle is involved in another accident. Read the full blog to learn more about inspecting and replacing set belts on Collision Hub.

Lean: One size does not fit all – – ABRN (Automotive Body Repair News)
So what do you think? I know that you have heard of lean, but what’s your opinion? I think there is a place for lean, but I agree with the statement, “once size does not fit all.”
This is not about lean, but in education, Kansas required all Collision Repair Programs to align with each other. We all had to completely change our curriculum to fit the alignment. Again, I think there is some value in doing this, but it kind of seems like the cookie cutter approach to me. Any special niches or training that helped meet the needs of the local communities were washed out in the alignment.
Just like with anything, there are going to be pros and cons. Be sure to read this article about lean that I found on ABRN then give me your opinion about lean.
