Are you wanting to produce that slick show car finish. This is a step that will help smooth the surface and produce that type of finish. I knew how good clay bars worked on smoothing the paint surface by removing contamination, such as tar, oxidation, and other contaminations. However, it was not until a student of mine had some overspray on a part, he used the clay bar to remove the overspray and make the part look new that I realized how useful the clay bar is in a body shop. The student worked for a dealership in their detailing department and he told me they use the clay bars on everything. That is when I started experimenting more with the clay bar. It works great for removing overspray on glass, chrome, paint surface, etc. The clay bar has a lot more uses than just detailing. If you have never used one, I suggest giving it a try for yourself.
Steps:
- Wash The Surface – It is very important to start with a clean surface. You do not want to rub and roll the dirt as that will scratch the paint surface.
- Feel The Surface – Use your hand to rub on the paint surface. If it feels dry, bumpy, or you feel a drag, then you need to clay bar that area. As mentioned, this can be used on paint or glass for overspray too.
- Use The Clay Bar – Flatten the clay bar and use the detail mist to lubricate the surface. I have used water too. Rub the surface until it feels smooth and slick.
- Wipe Dry and Apply Wax – Apply a coat of wax as directed by the wax that you are using. Caution: Wax has silicone which may not want to be used in a body shop environment. If the car has just been painted, do not wax for 3 months.
