WyoTech Teaches Custom Car Fabrication in Sacramento

Custom CarTo hot rod enthusiasts, cars are far more than just a form of transportation. They’re mobile works of art, high-octane expressions of power, grace, beauty and individualism. Street rods are exciting. They’re fun. They’re sexy. They’re as American as apple pie and as timeless as the open road.

If you have a passion for custom automobiles and would like to go pro, you can learn all the tools, techniques and tricks of the car customizing trade at WyoTech in Sacramento, Calif. WyoTech’s Street Rod and Custom Fabrication specialty is offered as part of the school’s Collision/Refinishing Technology program. In just one year, you can be ready to compete for entry-level positions with custom car fabricators, body shops, custom auto paint facilities and other businesses that cater to the needs of the hot rod and custom car market.

The Street Rod and Custom Fabrication Curriculum

WyoTech’s Street Rod and Custom Fabrication program offers a lot of hands-on lab work. In WyoTech’s modern workshop, you’ll get a chance to get experience with a number of essential tools, including:

  • English wheel
  • Power hammer
  • Planishing hammer
  • Bead roller
  • Louver press

You’ll be trained in custom auto painting and have an opportunity to learn how to apply specialized finishes like pearls, candies and pinstriping. And you will, of course, learn the basics of custom body construction, including:

  • Sheet metal shaping and fabrication
  • Body solder application
  • M.I.G. and T.I.G. welding
  • Hidden pin hinges (suicide doors)
  • Firewalls, floorboards and transmission tunnels

Upon graduation, WyoTech’s Career Services department can help you identify and contact potential employers in your area. WyoTech has a nationwide reputation for education excellence, and many custom car fabricators are eager to hire WyoTech graduates when openings occur.

If custom cars are your passion, you can turn that hobby into a profession by taking theMotorsports Chassis Fabrication specialty program at WyoTech in Sacramento, Calif. This specialty program can give you hands-on training in the fundamentals of metalworking, metal finishing, welding, frame design and other construction essentials. Courses are taught by industry professionals who are experts in the automotive field.

The Motorsports Chassis Fabrication specialty program is offered as part of WyoTech’sCollision/Refinishing Technology program, a career education program designed for automotive enthusiasts who want to go pro. When you take this specialty program, you will get hands-on experience in:

  • Measuring
  • Pattern and outline development
  • Mechanical drawing and reading
  • Attachment methods
  • Metal cutting and finishing
  • MIG and TIG welding
  • Frame design and modifications
  • Roll cage construction
  • Complete tube chassis fabrication

Skills you will learn from the Collision/Refinishing Technology “core” curriculum include:

  • MIG welding
  • Mechanical systems related to collision repair
  • Steel and aluminum panel repair techniques
  • Structural measuring and repair
  • Replacing bolted and welded panels
  • And more!

You will also learn the fundamentals of refinishing, including:

  • Surface preparation and masking
  • Spray gun operation
