Vehicle Construction – Magnesium – Cautions To Consider

September 5, 2011 by Butler--BCRN 2 Comments

We were discussing the different types of materials auto manufactures are using to design vehicles.  One of the metals is magnesium.  This metal is lightweight and strong, but extra precautions should be taken when welding around it.  Magnesium will ignite producing an bright explosion and is very difficult to put out once burning.  I have have never seen it, but I have heard of vehicles burning to the ground due to someone welding too close to magnesium.  This is something you do not what to happen to you as a technician.  Check out these videos and I think you will remember to be cautious around magnesium.
