New PPG Fast Dry Clear Coat: DC 2000 Ultra Velocity Clear

March 29, 2012 by Butler--BCRN 1 Comment

We tried the new PPG DC 2000 Ultra Velocity clear coat to see how it works.  Brandon, a BCC collision repair student, was at the last minute trying to get his Blazer completed before we took our Christmas break.  Lucky for us, out paint suppliers had dropped off a quart of a new fast dry clear coat for us to try.

With little time left we decided to give the new clear coat a try.  The technical data sheet stated that the clear coat should be dry and ready to buff in 20 to 30 minutes without heat.  To apply the clear coat, spray two full wet coats without flash time between coats.  We sprayed the two coats as stated on the TDS, waited 30 minuted and tested a small spot to see if we could really sand and buff the clear.   The small spot sanded and buffed fine.

We allowed it to dry a little longer for handling, then we carefully installed the parts and Brandon drove his Blazer home.

The clear coat is great for one or two parts.  However, it is not designed for larger jobs or completes.  So if you have a last minute part that you need to get painted, then you may want to give this clear coat a try.
