Can Technical Education Programs Like Collision Repair Offer Solutions To The Drop-Out Rate?

July 23, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

I read an article addressing the concerns of the high school drop-out rate in Kansas. However, this is a problem the entire nation faces. I believe the same solutions keep surfacing, which is technical education. We must realize that ever not student is going to seek a four year degree. We need to find alternative pathways that these students can and will become successful in. Here is a quote from the article that offers technical education as one of the solutions for this problem.

“Often if they get hooked on one thing, they get through,” Roehm said. “If we can get them interested in welding or auto body, if they get hooked, they find a way to get through the rest of it.”

I don’t think this is anything new. I believe that we’ve realized the impact that technical education has on our students. However, I believe the new challenge is budget. Finding the budget to fund these programs. That is the piece of the puzzle we need to work on.
