In this video we are going to demonstrate how to mask a car that has been repaired for primer. In other training videos, we’ve repaired the dent, applied and block sanded body filler and finishing glaze. Now we are ready to mask so we can prime.
Masking is required to prevent over spray from getting onto adjacent panels.
Here are the steps to mask the car:
1.Blow off all sanding dust so you have a clean surface to mask and for the tape to stick to.
2. Using 3M or quality automotive 1 1/2 masking tape, outline the damaged by back masking nearby panel edges. Be sure to mask to the edge of the panel. This will prevent primer from getting into the jamb area.
3.Back mask any other areas that you do not want primer to get. Back masking will prevent a hard to sand hard edge. This can be done by using 12” or 18” masking paper.
4.Outline remaing tape edges with 12” to 18” masking paper.
5.Cover entire car with plastic.
6.Using a razor blade, cut around the panel that you want to prime.
7.Using 1 1/2 tape, tape plastic edges to the masking paper.
When correct, everything should be covered except for the area needing primer.
