In this video, Ren Write, with Service King Collision Center explains how paintless dent repair (PDR) performed to remove small dings and dents such as hail damage.
In the last article I wrote a tutorial on how to repair hail damage using the 3M Dynamic Mixing System. This article, I am going to reflect on what Mr. Ren has to share with us.
Paintless dent repair uses special PDR tools to remove the dents from the backside of the body panel. However, some dents do not allow access to the back side. Therefore, adhesive methods are used to pull the dent from the top side of the panel. One of the essentials of performing painless dent repair is correct lighting. Many of the PDR tool kits that are purchased includes a light, which can be used to help aid in locate the damage. One the dent is located and the reflection is at the correct angle, the technician can massage the dent out of the panel.
Advantages of PDR:
- Does not disturb original paint or e-coat corrosion protection.
- Speeds up repair times and reduces cost.
- Green – No chemicals used in the repair process.
Paintless dent repair is not for every technician, as it take a special training and patience to master this skill. There are also may methods that should not be used. For example, drilling holes in the car to access the damage is not recommended. So you may want to assure that the business that performs this work for does not use this method. As Service King mentioned, look for a business that will stand behind their work with a written guarantee. This will assure you make a wise decision when it comes to selecting a paintless dent repair business, which may be soon with hail season around us.
