I remember when I was a kid working on my first Camaro, how excited I was to learn about chrome paint. I couldn’t believe they actually made paint in an aerosol can that really looks like chrome. I remember thinking the possibilities are endless.
Many of my parts were going to look just like the chrome cap on top of the spray can!
The paint lid I sprayed with the aerosol chrome paint is on the left. The lid that come on the spray paint is on the right.
Well, I think you know where I am going with this, because the parts did not look like the paint cap. Not even close. I mean this spray paint may be cool for some type of craft or decoration, but not for car parts in my opinion.
I’ve always been intrigued with chroming parts, but never had the money to get into it the right way. To do actually chrome take 1000s of dollars for the equipment. However, I did recently learn that Eastwood has a chrome paint that caught my attention. It comes with the chrome coating and a clear coating.
In this video episode, we went through the steps to apply the chrome paint to a few parts on the 66 Mustang project we’re working on. First we took the part off the Mustang and cleaned them using wax and grease remover. Then we scuffed them up to the paint would stick. We applied epoxy primer, black base coat and clear coat. The directions recommend spraying the chrome coating over black. I guess the chore coating is translucent and the gloss from the black will show through giving it a deeper look. Once painted, we sprayed light coats of the chrome coating. Now the parts were ready for the clear coating. Once the clear coating was applied, we reinstalled them onto the car.
Watch the video to decide what you think and to learn what my opinion is.
