Correct spray overlap is one o the easier techniques to master, but if not done properly, it can lead to several problems.
I have found the combination of distance and speed to be the most difficult challenge when learning to spray. However, if you do not overlap each pass the recommended amount, you may not achieve the correct mill thickness. This may result in not enough mill thickness or too much mill thickness. It may also lead to inconsistent passes and give the paint a striped effect.
As mentioned, this is an easy fix. Simply read the technical data sheet for the product being sprayed. For example, most solvent paints recommend a 50% overlap. To achieve this, overlap each pass 50%. Waterborne recommends 75% overlap. This is going to overlap each pass 25% more than the solvent paints.
Watch the video for a quick demonstration and a few more tips of how to spray the edges of your panel to assure you have correct overlap on the entire panels being sprayed.
I have had several questions on YouTube regarding spraying techniques and spray guns.
- Question: steven13121512 one question for you, im going to be painting my motorbike and one car, i dont want to spend hundreds on a paint gun , do you have any recommendations on what paint gun to get , i dont want to get a cheap cheap one as it will just result in orange peel
- Answer: One of the less expensive guns that we have had good results with is the FX 3000. We have used it quite a bit. This gun is under $150. For base/clear I recommend 1.3. You can view the gun and learn more at http://CollisionBlast.com/SharpeF
inex I was also discussing this some DIY enthusiast and some of them mentioned that they are using Devilbiss, but I am not sure the cost on them. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions!
- Question: steven13121512 what do you recommend for fluid control
- Answer: I would start out with full fluid (fluid valve backed out to max) then adjust from there. Adjust about a quarter turn at a time until you get the fluid you are wanting. If you are spot painting, you will use less fluid. Thanks for watching!does that 3m product fits any gun thanks for the video
- Question: 265chevy does that 3m product fits any gun thanks for the video
- Answer: That is a good question I should have addressed. Yes, you will need to get an adapter fitting for your specific gun, but I think they make them for all guns. Once you have the adapter, the cup will work like shown in video. Thanks for the question. You can learn more about the 3M PPS cups at http://CollisionBlast.com/3MPPS
- Question:Kenton GroombridgeDo you ever change the distance you hold the paint gun away from the panel? I know that the pattern would change depending on how far you hold the paint gun away from the panel. Thanks for the great videos.
- Answer: IF you get closer you will need to speed up and if you are further away you will need to slow down. For example, when spraying the center of a hood, it may be hard to have the gun at the same distance. In this case the gun may be further away and you must move slower. Does this help?
This is just a few of the questions I received, but I appreciate everyone for watching, commenting, and asking questions on my YouTube videos

May 27, 2016 at 7:45 pmI thought your answer about the distance a spray gun should be held away from a car was really helpful. It’s good to know that it’s usually best to speed up how car pain is applied when the paint gun is held close to a panel. That would explain why I’ve seen auto body repair workers paint my car really slowly when they held the paint gun a bit far from the metal panels.
