October 27, 2011 at 4:23 pm@J.Dale I think one biggest pieces of adviice for new employees is to not just show up to work for work. Bring something. Don’t come to work if you are not going to bring anything, stay home. You need to find what it is that you do that not only brings value to your position, what is it about you that brings value to the team? It may or may not be anything even related to what your job entails or has anything to do with the business itself. Employers, need to start realizing this. You may or may not need the best employee that can do what he/she is told, you may need a good employee that brings value you to your business. I’ve known some truly fabulous managers and estimators. They can manage and write up an extremely through sheet and handle the day to day. But they don’t have the best attitudes and wouldn’t be the right fit to work with customers. New employees, need to find what it is about them that is valuable and employers need capitolize on this concept and take a personal interest in who that person is rather than worrying about finding the ideal person. Finding the right people for your business is a difficult task. It’s even more complicated in finding the “perfect” employee for your business. I think employers put way too much emphasis on targeting the employee that has the most experience, the most ‘certifications’ etc. and not enough time discovering who that person is and the value they would bring to the business rather than “what can they do”.
