In this video, David and Ryan, collision repair students demonstrate how to perform a butt weld.  This weld type is used when the weld area will be visible, such as sectioning a quarter panel.  The welded area is ground smooth then fiberglass filler is applied to seal the weld.  The sectioned area is finished with body filler, primer and paint.  When completed, the welded area should not be visible.

A butt weld may also use a backing plate, which is a piece of metal place behind metal being welded.  Be sure to check back often to see what we’re up to in the collision repair program.  For more Butler posts visit http://www.collisionblast.com/author/butler-bcrn/
