August 11, 2010 at 8:37 pmLearning a trade in the auto body field is best learned with an “On the Job” employment. At 80 years old and 65 years in and around the collision industry we find that the best results we have seen are accomplished in the real world of the business. If looking for a place to learn the trade, talk some shop owner or manager to hire you as a helper and agree to work cheap!! You should get their attention with that offer! Have an understanding that you are there to work hard but also to learn a trade. Before you waste your time, take an aptitude test to asertain your chances of achieving your goals.
I had two uncles in the industry, one a painter and the other an exceptional metslman. His dad was a good old pro and Joe exceeded him with his remarkable skills, all taught in his dad’s shop. It was Joe who inspired me and while I was in Illinois and he was in Southern California I had to seek out someone to give me a job in a body shop that would take time to teach me. As it turned out, I had to learn by looking over a shoulder. It was a long process but I loved the work so much we paid the price of endurance and ended up spending the rest of my working days in and around rebuilding wrecked cars, I still love to build totals!!
